This morning I heard one of the sports radio blowhards over at ESPN describe himself as "socially liberal and fiscally conservative." I've actually heard that buzzing around for a while now. I understand the desire to take the best attributes of our fractured two party system and create an a la carte political stance that works for you, but aren't those two things really mutually exclusive?

Not really. Call it what you want (Libertarianism, Classical Liberalism, Small Government), that's basically what he's describing.
A small government means less government spending (fiscal conservatism) and more personal freedosm (socially liberal).
Socially liberal is a broad term and I think we may be interpreting it differently in this case. I took it more as "I want to be viewed as compassionate, but I want to keep all of my money."
