Sorry, Folks...

...but I have to side with Obama here. I love Vegas as much as the next guy, but let's not pretend it's beyond reproach. People gambling away money they don't have to spend on that sort of thing is a real problem in this country. The powers that be in Vegas seem to think by putting out a couple of Public Service Announcements, they've shielded themselves from any kind of scrutiny.

I understand (I think) what he was trying to say. Yes, I understand that when people think Vegas they think gambling. I mean those gigantic hotels don't get there by the casinos losing. But Vegas offers a lot more than gambling and prostitution.

Cheap rooms, entertainment and shows wherever you go, hotels built to handle massive trade shows, world class restaurants, inexpensive housing, jobs, etc. I know quite a few people who call Vegas home and they don't view it in the way the rest of the world does.

Of course there is more to Vegas than gambling, but to act as though gambling isn't the foundation of the Vegas tourism industry is to stick your head in the sand. I, too, have known people who have lived in Vegas and didn't view it the same way as the rest of the world does. And lots of people live in San Diego, but never go to the beach either.

People use the expression "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" even when they're not talking about Vegas at all. There are plenty of colloquialisms that get tossed around in our language that have roots in something but in context are very distant from the thing itself. This is political correctness taken too far I think.

There are tax deductions for losses due to gambling. I think that's bullshit.

With the repeated bashing does this mean the democrats lose Nevada in 2012? It is a democrat state is it not? Can they afford to keep losing seats in the senate and states in the next election?
