Jar Jar strikes again! Darabont is a pretty solid screenwriter, and I'll take Spielberg's opinion over Lucas' every time these days. He probably wanted to bring Short Round back. What an ass.
I am sure there weren't enough stupid robots beeping and blinking for George Lucas' taste. He probably wanted the new Indy to find an egyptian portal that led him straight to Dantooine and then father Han Solo, so that this whole shit-pile can be wrapped in one big LUCASFILMS bow.
