A Mixed Bag

Here

"So far, Iraqis have held some small-scale protests around the country - occasionally punctuated by violent clashes between security and demonstrators - demanding better public services, more assistance for widows and orphans and greater protection for human rights. But unlike protests in the wider Middle East, they have generally not called for a complete change in government. Iraq is one of the few countries in the region where officials are democratically elected."

Okay, I'm Interested

So, I've never been really big on Thor as a comic book superhero, but I have to admit I'm kind of intrigued with the upcoming Thor film and his susequent addition to the forthcoming Avengers films. Because, you know, I'm a big geek. Check out the new trailer for giant fiery knight bad guy action.

Now, throw in the Midgard Serpent straight Dieties & Demigods style and we are go.

The Lara Logan Story

As seen by this woman over at BIGPEACE.
Sadly her piece slides into desrcibing the bravery of journalists, the differences between victims and the misogyny of Egypt and less on what the EFF happened and what does this all mean for the future of Egypt and how will our government respond if these people get any further out of control. Which is what I was hoping she would talk about. She does tell us however, that Logan was brutalized for up to 30 minutes while people were yelling "Jew, Jew, Jew!" and the media has been virtually quiet about it all. That tells me one thing, when the middle east burns further and slaughters more, our media and our government will ignore it... for a little bit longer.

Oppression

Only white people can be racist and apparently now only Christians can religiously discriminate. The saddest thing here is how many people will read that definition of religious discrimination and see nothing wrong with it. At least they recognized that there is actually a dominant culture in America.

Fox News Terrifies You of Things!

Here's an article that says Fox News watchers are more concerned than people who watch other news outlets that American Muslims want to institute Shar'ia law. Actually, the poll merely says that more Fox watchers believe this, not that they are necessarily "concerned." Although the article doesn't say they are concerned either. It says they FEAR it. Once again showing that the media has no idea what the word "fear" means. Actually, I do fear it, but the media tends to use the word fear to cast an irrational light on opinions they don't agree with. If people are afraid of something that makes that thing seem like the bogeyman. And being an adult who's afraid of the bogeyman is silly. Hence, you're silly for worrying that Muslims might want to weave their own belief structure into the fabric of America. That's just good media condescension.

You Want Crack?

ScyFy picks up old Firefly episodes to air on their network. Nathan Fillion quickly throws gasoline on the longing fire of Firefly fans everywhere by saying he'd happy step back into the role. Quit fucking with me, Fillion.

So, About that Chick Reporter in Egypt

I don't want to come off as a completely insensitive a-hole here or anything, but I kind of want to address this whole situation with the reporter, Lara Logan, who was the victim of a "sustained sexual assault" in Egypt. First, the facts as I understand them.

1) She had previously left Egypt fearing the danger of remaining behind, as did many other journalists.

2) She returned because she felt that it was her duty as a journalist to be there for this important historical event. At the time obviously aware of the danger.

3) She became the victim of an undisclosed assault.

I don't want to go with the whole "she was asking for it" angle here. In fact, I sort of respect the fact that she placed herself in peril to do her job. Sort of. You can't ignore the fact that the danger was very real and she was apparently very aware of it, though. Common sense tells us that a woman is far more vulnerable in a case like this, but societal pressures demand that we ignore it. In my opinion, she should probably not have been there.

What exactly happened to her is an important question here as well. I don't need lurid details or anything, but again, due to societal pressures almost anything represents a sexual assault these days. If she was the subject of catcalls she was sexually assaulted in this country. Was she groped? Or worse? Because if she went into a perilous situation like that with eyes wide open and a couple of dudes merely copped a feel, then I don't think it's news.

Honestly, I hope this woman was subjected to no more than some minor harassment here, but no matter what she will catapulted to a-list journalist status. She's already vowed to return to work within weeks. And let's not forget the ratings bonanza her employers will reap with the exclusives! Those sorts of rewards for being a victim always makes me suspicious.

There, now I feel like a proper asshole.

Great Quote

Regarding Christie:

"...This is a guy who has focused his message of change, and is clear about what he stands for. This is distinct from Obama’s message of change, which meant different things to different people in 2008 and left almost everybody disappointed…"

Always Good For A Chuckle

I wonder if this guy can keep it up. As of now I would vote for him for President, but only because I know so little about him and he makes me laugh.

Legal Groundwork?

Study shows that gay adoptive parents in states that don't allow gay adoptive parents are more likely to shows signs of depression and anxiety. I'm going to start with 'duh' and end with wondering whether this is an attempt to lay groundwork for legally forcing states to allow adoption by gay parents. Truthfully, I don't even know why I'm wondering.

In closing, let me say that anytime I see that a study or article is 'peer-reviewed' these days, my first instinct is to want to wipe my ass with it.

The School's Hands Were Tied Here.

...Obviously. I'm not at all surprised by the overreaction and poor grasp of "rational response" by the LAUSD here, but I was surprised to hear the Los Angeles has such a thing as a "psychiatric mobile response team." In defense of the LAUSD, however, I will say that if they didn't jump in with that response, and the child did end up doing something to himself, then that concerned parent would have sued the county back to the stone age. Oh well, she's going to try to do it anyway. In closing, lawyers suck.

You Will Assimilate!

A friend posted this on Facebook and I didn't want to get too into it over there for fear of outing myself once again as a conservative sympathizer. It's a food manifesto this guy posted over at the NY Times which outlines what basically amounts to how we should mandate and tax our way to a healthier, more vegetarian society. All in the name of healthcare costs, of course. No one would ever want to address the actual reasons the cost of healthcare in this country is so high. How would they push such an agenda without a healthcare crisis? And look at the comments. Not one dissenter in the mix.

Bad News, Amigos.

The Walking Dead producer Frank Darabont (he of the one dimensional right wing nutjob stock hillybilly character) has hired the first member of his new writing staff. The guy he hired was a former producer and writer for The Shield and Hawthorne. A lot of people liked The Shield, but I don't know much about it other than it dealt with police corruption and it aired on FX, so it probably contained an uncomfortable amount of softcore pornography. Softcore pornography is lame (Am I supposed to jerk off to your cable drama? I'm confused.). Hawthorne is some cable medical drama starring Will Smith's wife, so I'm going to go ahead and assume it's full of good ole fashioned Hollywood sensibilities. This dude working on those two shows isn't what worries me, though. What worries me is that he was also a writer and producer of Crash, the pay cable spin-off of the greatest white guilt feature film ever made. I've never been so certain there will be a George Bush zombie and that at some point the Walking Dead survivors will come across a valiant black politician survivor who will give his life to save them all. And at some point Rick is sure to denounce his former life as a police officer. Oh, and can we expect to see more kindhearted Mexican gang members? Count on it! Did Global Warming bring the zombie apocalypse? Do you even need to ask?

Effing Balls Of Steel

Next time someone says to you, "no way could Bruce Lee take on 40 dudes at one time" Just think of this man.

Less New York, Maybe?

I'm assuming this is an ad designed to get gay marriage okayed in New York, and I'm frankly rather surprised they'd waste the money. Isn't New York the most enlightened liberal mecca in the world? I mean, do they have predominantly Catholic minorities brickwalling the cause there too? It's the Italians, isn't it? Anyway, it seems kind of smug to say that New Yorkers are totally for gay marriage when if that were the case, there would be no need to bother campaigning. Anyway, if Barbara Bush wants to like, grab dinner and talk about it, I'm free pretty much any night.

Maybe We've Been too Hard-On PETA Around Here

See what I did there? It'll make more sense after you see their Superbowl ad:
