I've seen China, and we need to wake up. Honestly, I crapped my pants and my world view was turned upside down. We're pretty doomed. That doom will only hasten if we raise the walls of protectionism.
We need to improve the speed at which qualified foreigners are given visas. We need to create some sort of brain trust magnet that attracts and keeps the best and the brightest.
Protectionism will only keep good people in other countries, as well as other countries products, etc.
