This is terrible. That poor guy. And also terrible is the way the media is desperately trying to pin this on the pilot, as if it was his intent to crash into houses. So far it seems that one of his engines failed, and per protocol he tried to get his jet to the nearest landbased airfield. It was unlikely that anyone could have forseen his second engine failing, and by all accounts he waited pretty much til the last second to bail out. The media wants to drag his ass through the coals for not ditching his plane at sea or something. I'm pretty sure the military would have gotten on him for ditching a $20 million plane with one perfectly functional engine (which by all accounts makes it plenty flyable). The best part was in this morning's paper when some local lawyer/civilian pilot went ahead and judged the military fighter pilot's judgment. I'm sure that pilot is quite devastated himself. Heck, I'd send them both condolences. As far as aid, however, I'm pretty sure the widower will have more money than God when this is all said and done so a poundcake or a casserole will probably do.

This really is a tragic story. I have a college buddy stationed down in SD who's a Marine F-18 pilot. I keep hoping he's not the one that crashed...

Life is so unpredictable.
